New courses offered at SACI in Spring 2014: Installation & Performance Art and Digital Approaches for 2D Artists

Installation & Performance Art @ SACI

Installation and Performance Art

ARTS400 Instructor: Melania Lanzani

Credits: 3
Offered: Fall, Spring
Prerequisite: None
(Note: Starting Spring 2014)

Installation and Performance Art are both based on the merger of Space and Time and on a relationship between the artist and the audience which is interdependent: the piece doesn’t fully exist without the viewer’s active participation. Utilizing their interests and abilities in a variety of subjects and media, students in this course create environments that immerse the viewer in a sensory/intellectual/emotional experience. Classes include demonstrations and presentations by the instructor about art skills particularly useful in installation and performance. Students undertake research, give reports, maintain sketchbooks, and participate in critiques and the SACI end-of-term exhibition. Students may incorporate a variety of media, including photographs, paintings, drawings, videos, sounds, sculptural materials, found objects, their own body and/or someone else’s body in works that expand the physical boundaries of art beyond the “neutral” wall or the display of isolated objects on pedestals. Digital Approaches for 2D Artists

ARTC221 Instructor: Karen Yurkovich

Credits: 3
Offered: Fall, Spring
Prerequisite: None
(Note: Starting Spring 2014)

The course Digital Approaches for 2D Artists meets the technical and creative demands of the student of contemporary art. They will gain technical dexterity in the use of paint and photographic modification tools for art-making and art career purposes. Emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of color management, photo retouching, imaging, masks and alpha channels to foster a good understanding of the aesthetic principles of images and environments, including light, texture, scale and proportion. Basic portfolio creation is covered from business card to image presentation and enhancement.
