Contemporary Art Galleries in Florence, Italy

Galleria La Corte Arte Contemporanea, Florence

Galleria La Corte Arte Contemporanea, Florence (location for annual SACI Post-Bac Exhibition)

If you visit Florence as a tourist, you probably don’t come for the contemporary art, as much for its rich reserve of Renaissance art and history. But Florence is a dynamic and creative city with young art students and professional artists inspired by their environment. Numerous famous artists such as Francesco Clemente, Bill Viola and Damien Hirst have recently shown their work in Florence. In fact, some museums such as the Accademia, Museo Marino Marini, and the Palazzo Vecchio often present contemporary exhibitions temporarily displayed alongside their historic collections to attract a wider audience, so be on the look out for these special opportunities.

The contemporary art scene in Florence is somewhat difficult to notice, but there are some interesting contemporary art galleries around town worth a visit. Of course there are also the SACI Galleries with approximately 16 exhibitions of international contemporary artists a year! Even SACI MFA and Post-Bac students have an opportunity to show their final work in a local contemporary art gallery. Unfortunately, there is no monthly organized “gallery night” that most other cities promote. Here is a gallery guide list of some of our favorites, including a few contemporary art museum spaces (information subject to change, updated September 2015):
