SACI’s Illustration class taught this spring by Sepideh Emami recently had a guest speaker, Italian illustrator, Daniele Nannini. The class had a workshop with demonstrations in illustration techniques with Daniele. They had fun experimenting with drawing tools and discussing methods of illustrating of children’s books.
Daniele Nannini was born in Turin, but currently lives and works in Florence. He has a Degree in Humanities from the University of Pisa. Starting with commercial illustration, rendering for architects and urban planners, his field of interest has focused on publishing. Nevertheless, a relevant role in his work is still held by illustrating for advertising, game publishers and public utility.
His work has been published in fiction and non-fiction. In the children’s book field he illustrates for other authors, as well as designs and realizes books as author. Published in Italy, France, Greece, Iran, Japan, Spain and Swizerland, he often acts as his own editorial planner as well, either of a single book or of an entire series. In 2009 the compasses-zoo series (Animali Compassati, A notte tonda, Circocircotondo) has become a registered trade mark and an interactive website: compasses-zoo.net.
Awards: In 1988 he was awarded the Andersen-Baia delle Favole Prize as best illustrator of that year in Italy for the book Animali Compassati (Compasses Zoo). In 1992 the children jury of the Rodari Prize awarded him the second place for the book Gira e Scopri le Strisce (Turn the page and discover – Stripes).
Collective exhibitions: His work has been featured in Italian and international exhibitions such “Children’s Book Illustrators” in Nishinomiya and Tokyo 1984 and 1989, “Biennial of Illustration” in Bratislava 1987, “Selected Illustrators Exhibition Prize Catalonia” in Barcellona 1990, “Matite Italiane” at Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2000.
