19 metri quadri d’inferno
September 11 – October 27, 2014
Opening reception: Thursday, September 11 at 6pm
SACI is proud to present new work by photographer Antonio Manta in an exhibition at the Maidoff Gallery in Via Sant’Egidio 14, Florence. Join us on Thursday, September 11 at 6pm to inaugurate the exhibition 19 Square Meters of Hell. The artist collaborates with SACI’s MFA in Photography program.
Antonio Manta (Empoli, 1966) is a professional photographer and printer. While devoting himself to visual research of landscape and portraiture, he is also a photojournalist who has worked in Romania, Morocco, Tunisia, Togo, Uganda, Laos, Israel, Cambodia, Vietnam and Armenia — countries that he has traveled to for projects related to humanitarian purposes. In his series of images from 19 metri quadri d’inferno, Manta shows the tough reality of living conditions and the consequences of alcoholic dependencies in Zambia as seen through the photographer’s eyes while on a quest with colleagues to found the humanitarian foundation Gli Occhi della Speranza, which has since been recognized by ONLUS.
Manta has produced numerous exquisitely printed publications, some collective volumes, since 2004. The series “Spettri di Visioni,” in particular, marks the beginning of his own editorial projects. Some of his works have been published in major magazines and his solo exhibitions have been presented at major galleries, museums and exhibition spaces such as the Senate of the Republic, the Italian Center of Photography of Bibbiena, and the MART in Rovereto. His photographs are in the collection of Len-Levine in New York, and in private collections in Italy and France.
He teaches “Theory of color and digital printing technique” in the two-year specialization of Photography of Cultural Heritage at the Istituto Superiore Industrie Artistiche of Urbino (ISIA). In 2010 he began working with Epson as the main spokesperson and developer of Italian international certification system Digigraphie®. Since 2008 he is a promoter of Canson Italy and from 2012, Canson International. He collaborates with other prestigious brands such as Profoto and Eizo. As a printer, he has received major national and international awards (Orvieto Fotografia, Lucca Digital Photo Festival, Fotolux, Serravezza Photography, Corigliano Calabro Photography, CortonaOnTheMove, Les Rencrontres d’Arles). In 2007 he was the official printer for galleries of Lyon and Arles. He was also organizer and curator the Fabriano Photo Festival in March 2010. In his feverish activity as a passionate photographer and promoter of the culture of photography, Antonio Manta is known for having given numerous seminars and workshops on post-production for the fine art print.
