SONIC SOMATIC

October 8 – 10, 2015

Florence, Italy

Trial Version and International Feel present SONIC SOMATIC, a three-day festival (October 8-10, 2015) that aims to explore the world of sound moving between contemporary music production and visual arts through the specific perspective of the body.

With musical performances, collective listening sessions, and site-specific installations, SONIC SOMATIC condenses a wide cultural offering in just a few days, experimenting with the relationships between body, space and sound. SONIC SOMATIC is conceived as a diffused festival involving a diversity of spaces around the city of Florence. The courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi, the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, the English Cemetary, and the Museo Marino Marini will host site-specific sound projects, created in close dialogue with the cultural identity and the physical architecture of such places.

SONIC SOMATIC opens its program on Wednesday, October 8th in the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi with Vexations by Erik Satie, performed for this occasion by Alessandria di Nardo. Vexations (1893) is renowned for being the longest music composition ever: a short score exhausting in 152 notes and written on five pentagrams, that Satie was invited to play 840 times. Since the first historical performance by John Cage in 1963 in New York, the piece has been publicly played only 25 times in history. Vexations has always put the player and the public to the test with a total duration between 9 and 24 hours. On the occasion of SONIC SOMATIC, Vexations will be played for 26th times, the first time in Florence. In the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi, Alessandria di Nardo will play the piece from 10am ending at approximately at 10pm. The twelve-hours performance will involve the audience visually and acoustically, modifying the perception of the space-time dimension both on an individual and a collective level.
