Palermo Summer School of Art – Caffè Internazionale

July 16-26, 2016

Caffè Internazionale presents the first summer workshop in Palermo, Italy on contemporary art. Under the guidance of artist Stefania Galegati Shines and curator and SACI Art History instructor Daria Filardo, 15 international students will discuss the idea of “counter-production” as a basis for the analysis of processes connected with the production of art. (See an interview with Stefania and Daria at ATP Diary.)

Caffè Internazionale aims, through offering this summer workshop, to open a dialogue with Palermo, a rapidly changing city that will host the Biennale di Manifesta in 2018. In the wake of technological and economic transformation during the 20 th and 21 st centuries, the artistic production has undergone major changes. How do artists confront contemporary conditions of global production and capital in view of the constraints of a reality framed according to post-Fordism with its insistence on efficiency, flexibility, and intelligent self-management? Some artists have responded to the changed conditions of production indirectly by pointing out their intrinsic contradictions with the use of terms such as “productive non-production,” “non-productive production,” or “counter-productive work,” and by using the body as a site of “reproduction” and “self-production.”

Caffè Internazionale will host a workshop exploring these ideas. Each participant will have individual and group time for creative processes. Guests will include artists and curators who will foster collective discussions and facilitate production or “counter-production” of a final project. The workshops will include presentations and discussion of the work of individual artists/participants, excursions to special hidden places in the city, opportunities to work with the invited guests, and a final event/party.
