This summer, SACI alum Molly Di Grazia (MFA, 2015) participated in an international summer residency in Giverny, France.

Molly Di Grazia (MFA, 2015), a SACI MFA in Studio Art graduate, was invited to participate in the Terra Summer Residency in Giverny, France, which brings together doctoral scholars of American Art and emerging artists worldwide for a nine-week residential program in the historic village of Giverny. The program encourages independent work while providing seminars and mentoring by senior scholars and artists to foster reflection and debate, and is nestled among landscaped gardens and situated in close proximity to Claude Monet’s house and gardens and the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny.

During my time at the Terra Summer Residency in Giverny I worked on a project inspired by European reclining tomb sculptures called ‘gisants’ that typically depict royal subjects. I was interested in the politics of whose stories are recorded within historical narratives while at the same time exploring the material significance of capturing a person’s likeness. Over a period of two months I was able to concentrate on this investigation in dialogue with a group of other artists and doctoral candidates in art, and the cross-disciplinary environment combined with seminars by invited scholars was extremely enriching.  – Molly Di Grazia
