Christina Gednalske: Nearly There
October 11 – November 8, 2016
OPENING: Tuesday, October 11 at 6pm
Something that is never quite, but always almost, Nearly There is both a marker of distance and a measure of existence. It reveals what is real and present, but not completely and not yet.
In the exhibition, the artist uses movement and placement to approach presence and identity as flexible, ever-changing concepts. The works restructure, combine, extend, multiply, and otherwise alter seemingly reliable imagery to question the relationship and solidity between body, memory, and place within a supposed reality, exploring layered, latent connections between one’s presence and everything else. The included installations examine how images, words, and movement can be used to stretch and reveal reality, in the attempt to fully represent and explore relationships to past self, family, origins, surroundings, and collective memory. In a space meant to exemplify this process, the viewer must actively participate in the same search that the works embody; to view them requires movement, constant evaluation, and an openness to uncertainty.
