“Pretty Sad”

#RESIST / Nave Gallery Annex
53 Chester Street, Somerville, MA
April 27 – May 27

Now on view at #RESIST / Nave Gallery Annex in Somerville, MA, SACI Alumna Spring 1984, Resa Blatman, has created a site-specific installation in response to the new president of the United States. In a large composition of brightly colored flowers and flowing script, “Pretty Sad” juxtaposes an initially alluring and feminine appearance with cruel and grotesque words specifically chosen to reflect the president’s vocabulary and attitudes.

Blatman describes the installation:

Some of the wording in “Pretty Sad” comes from the phrasing used by the current U.S. president. He often uses “very, very” to underscore how much he likes or dislikes something, and he uses “sad” to disparage someone’s efforts. The other words are not just mine, but come from millions of Americans, and people around the world, who believe that this U.S. president is a misogynist, racist, and narcissist. The word “cheeto” has been used to cut him down, and it reflects his unnatural/fake orange facial cover-up. The flowers are an attempt to make the entire installation sickeningly sweet and as “feminine” as possible, to offset the grotesqueness of the subject matter.

The show is on view through May 27th and the project is ongoing.
