Black on Black. From Fontana and Kounellis to Galliani

Through July 9, 2017

Villa Bardini, Florence – ITALY

The sum of all colors and the absence of light gives the black a sense of mystery associated with a secretive darkness at times evil and sinful. In the world of fashion, however, black evokes elegance and sophistication. And in art, black, in all of its tonalities, is probably the most evocative “color,” full of depth and expression in various media and textures: saturated black paint, charcoal, graphite, ink, burnt wood, chalkboard, tar, ash….

In the exhibition Nero su Nero. Da Fontana e Kounellis a Galliani, curated by Vera Agosti, black is explored in a selection of 31 masterpieces of contemporary Italian painting and sculpture. The exhibition, which is a collaboration between the Tornabuoni Art Gallery and the Museo Fondazione Roberto Capucci, examines the different ways in which contemporary Italian artists have used this non-color. Works from various art movements include the Spazialismo of Lucio Fontana, the Informal with Alberto Burri, the Conceptual with Vincenzo Agnetti, the Arte Povera of Kounellis, the Transavanguardia by Enzo Cucchi, and Pop Art by Tano Festa and Franco Angeli. The exhibition culminates with a selection of black dresses by fashion designer Roberto Capucci, in dialogue with three works by Alberto Burri, Enzo Cucchi, and Omar Galliani, a sort of summation and synthesis of the whole collective. After all, black never goes out of style!
