Paesaggio Dentro,” curated by SACI instructor, Pietro Gaglianò, opens July 8th at 7PM at the Galleria Susanna Orlando in Pietrasanta, Italy.

The exhibition focuses on the theme of the paesaggio (landscape), an iconic subject of traditional painting that, in the 21st century, now deals with questions of aesthetics and politics. The paesaggio is connected to individual identity, the transformation of art’s many languages, and art itself in its rapport with the world.

Paesaggio dentro presents the work of two artists who use painting to translate their dynamic relationships with the scenery around them. The paesaggio is not only a natural or man-made space, but a place of cultural representation: the dimension in which they discover cultural data, collective narratives, and cultural crossroads.

Aryan Ozmaei and Giuseppe Vassallo come from different backgrounds and experiences. Iranian, but a resident in Florence for years, Ozmaei conjures elements of her native traditions through her large format works, using ample references to the history of European and American art. In her work, the natural landscape assumes a stylized form, as if it were the transfer of an ornamental motif, and emerges in the architectural interiors, where women and men move within in a network of symbols that go beyond the anecdotal distinction between Orient and Occident in a synthesis of formal and intellectual autonomy.

The work of Vassallo resembles a mosaic of a Sicilian aesthetic – cinematic cuts and sensual forms – in which a landscape unfolds in its entirety like a theatre of human events. The history of art overlaps in layers and then falls, literally, in Vassallo’s paintings, passing beyond genres and citations. The gaze is obligated to move along the parameters of representation, to look away, to challenge the preconceptions of the cultural landscape that the western observer is accustomed to cultivating.

The desire to overcome limits and revisit the concept of appearance inspire both artists’ research. Through painting, they demonstrate a movement through the visible: a cognitive journey towards the understanding of true position and ability in this world.

Aryan Ozmaei was born in Tehran, where she received her degree at Azad Art and Architecture University. She has lived and worked in Florence since 2004 and received her Laurea at the Accademia di Belle Arti.
